What Is a Godly Man? What It Means to Be One
What is a godly man? Less about your image, more about your character: fearing God, telling the truth, keeping your word. Here's what that really looks like.
A godly man is someone whose character is shaped by God more than by his image. He fears the Lord, loves people, tells the truth, and keeps his word when no one is watching. He's not perfect; he's surrendered, and his life slowly starts to look more like Jesus.
That last part matters, because most of us learned the opposite. We learned to manage how we look: build the highlight reel, hide the cracks, say the right thing in the room and another in the group chat. God has never been impressed by image. He's after the man underneath.
What does the Bible say a godly man is?
Scripture keeps circling back to one idea: God measures a man by his heart, not his appearance. When the prophet Samuel went looking for Israel's next king, he assumed the tall, impressive son was the obvious pick. God stopped him.
The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart. (1 Samuel 16:7)
That's the whole thing in one line. A godly man isn't the most polished guy in the room. He's the one whose inner life (his motives, his thoughts, the way he treats people who can't repay him) is being slowly rebuilt by God. It's the idea behind everything we make at HEVN, from Ephesians 4:24: putting on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness. Godliness is that new self, worn daily, and it grows out of who you already are in Christ, so it helps to be clear on your identity in Christ before you worry about your reputation.
Micah put the same idea into a kind of job description.
He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God. (Micah 6:8)
Act justly. Love mercy. Walk humbly. None of those are about being loud, rich, or admired. They're about character.
A godly man is built in private, not on a stage
Go back to that scene with Samuel. Seven of Jesse's sons walk past, each one looking the part, and God passes on all of them. The one He chooses, David, is out in a field with the sheep, doing unglamorous work nobody was watching. His character was formed in private long before anyone handed him a crown or a giant to fight. By the time the pressure came, the man was already built.
Most of who you'll become is decided in the hours nobody sees: how you spend time alone, what you do with your phone at midnight, whether you keep promises that cost you. Integrity means you're the same man in the dark as in the light. Younger guys feel this most, which is why staying rooted through seasons of change, like keeping God first in college, matters so much. Paul told a young Timothy the same thing.
Don't let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity. (1 Timothy 4:12)
A godly man stands for truth, even when it costs him peace
Here's where godliness gets uncomfortable. A godly man doesn't just believe the truth quietly. He stands on it, even when standing costs him. Jesus was honest about that cost.
I did not come to bring peace but a sword. (Matthew 10:34)
Read that one carefully, because it's easy to twist. Jesus isn't endorsing violence or picking fights. He's warning that His truth divides. When you actually follow Him, you stop going along with everything. You won't laugh at the joke. You'll tell a friend the hard thing. You'll lose a fake peace that was only ever built on staying quiet. The sword here is the truth itself, and it cuts a line between what's real and what isn't.
A godly man would rather have honest conflict than dishonest comfort. He's gentle, not harsh, but he won't trade his convictions to be liked. That courage takes a strength you keep going back to God for, and these Bible verses for strength help refill it. Standing firm isn't a personality type. It's a command.
Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be courageous; be strong. (1 Corinthians 16:13)
How do you actually become a godly man?
You don't earn godliness by trying harder to look good. You grow into it by staying close to the One who is good. A few honest places to start:
- Get in the Word like it's food, not homework. You can't stand for a truth you don't actually know. Read it slowly, daily.
- Tell the truth in small things. Character is built in tiny, unseen choices long before the big ones.
- Find men who will call you up, not just hype you up. Iron sharpens iron. You become who you walk with.
- Stay soft toward God. Pride hardens a man. A godly man keeps confessing, keeps surrendering, keeps coming back.
None of this happens overnight, and remembering that you're already a son of God, secure in who you are in Christ, takes the pressure off. Godliness is a direction, not a finish line. You'll fail, you'll repent, and you'll grow into the man God was quietly building all along.
A reminder you can wear
Some days you need the conviction in front of you, not buried in a journal. That's the whole reason we put Matthew 10:34 on a shirt. The SWORD tee carries that line about not coming to bring peace but a sword: a daily reminder that following Jesus means standing for truth instead of blending in. Wear it to share it, so when someone asks what it means, you get to tell them. You'll find it with our Christian t-shirts and our tees for men, made for the same reason: to wear your faith without making it corny.
A prayer to become a godly man
Here's a simple prayer to make your own.
Father, I'm done performing for people. Build in me the kind of character only You can see at first. Make me honest when it's easy to fake it, gentle when it's easy to be harsh, and brave enough to stand for Your truth when it costs me. Where I've chosen image over obedience, forgive me. Shape me, slowly, into a man who looks more like Your Son. Amen.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a godly man in simple terms?
A godly man is a man whose life is shaped by God more than by his image or reputation. He fears the Lord, tells the truth, loves people, and keeps his word when no one is watching. He is not flawless, he is surrendered. Micah 6:8 sums it up: he acts justly, loves mercy, and walks humbly with God, growing in character as the Holy Spirit changes him from the inside out.
What are the qualities of a godly man according to the Bible?
Scripture keeps naming the same qualities: integrity, honesty, humility, courage, self-control, faithfulness, and love for God and people. Paul told Timothy to set an example in speech, conduct, love, faith, and purity (1 Timothy 4:12). A godly man stands firm in his convictions yet stays gentle rather than harsh. These are not a checklist you finish once. They are fruit that grows as the Holy Spirit works in a surrendered heart.
How does a godly man treat others?
A godly man treats people the way Jesus did, with honesty and genuine care, especially toward those who can do nothing for him. He keeps his promises, speaks truth even when it is awkward, and refuses to be one person in public and another in private. He is patient, quick to listen, and slow to anger. He will tell a friend the hard thing out of love rather than flatter them to be liked.
Can a young man be godly?
Yes, and age has nothing to do with it. Paul told a young Timothy not to let anyone look down on him for being young, but to set an example for other believers instead. David was the overlooked youngest son before God chose him. Godliness is about a surrendered heart, not years lived. Get into the Word, find honest friends, tell the truth in small things, and stay close to God.
What does it mean that Jesus came to bring a sword, not peace?
In Matthew 10:34 Jesus says He did not come to bring peace but a sword. He is not endorsing violence. He is warning that His truth divides. When you genuinely follow Jesus, you stop going along with everything, and that honesty can create tension. The sword is the truth itself, drawing a line between what is real and what is false. A godly man accepts that cost rather than keep a fake peace.
